Part of the school’s success is due to the strength of its pedagogical model. The foundations that inspired the founders are still valid because they are timeless, they respond to a vision of the human being that looks inward and projects itself towards the future in the company of others. What are those principles? Whoever has lived through the school will be familiar with them: (1) “Educate, rather than instruct.” (2) “Discipline of Trust and autonomy”. (3) “What the teacher is, the school will be.” (4) “The Active School”. (5) “A humanistic and scientific education”.
From the formative point of view, in these years it has been seen that students and alumni are happy at the school, make lifelong friends, have identity and a sense of belonging, love their school, are creative, have strong self-esteem and self-confidence, know how to disagree and they cultivate close and friendly relationships with their teachers. The concern and exercise of every day is that this security, that confidence, does not become a source of pride or a justification for mediocrity. It is also a concern that students do not relate in the best way with others and with the problems of their life. The school, over the next ten years, will open the debate on coeducation and the possibility of receiving women as full-time students.
This education of the child depends largely on the training of the parent and the teacher. For this reason, with the School for Teachers and the School for Parents, the school seeks to expand the possibilities of educating to all people in the community. The example of educators and what is lived at home is essential for the best development of students.
In the future, the purpose of the Gimnasio, in terms of education, will focus on two aspects: (1) that students contribute to the improvement of humanity and the planet (contribution to something beyond one’s own being), and (2) that they cultivate the spiritual dimension.
A school that educates for the flourishing of the students
A first step will be to seek the development of all the dimensions of the being and not only of the intellectual dimension. The proposal is to discuss divisions by areas of knowledge (mathematics, language, technology, English, etc.) and to focus on dimensions of the being such as the body, emotions, social relationships, intellect, creativity, nature and environment, ethics and aesthetics, citizenship and material development. This purpose draws on the latest research in Positive Psychology. Research that has shown us that if we insist on the strengths of students, we will achieve better results and a learning environment that is more conducive towards the exchange of ideas. It has been shown us that if we insist on the importance of confidence, character and personal effort, to overcome difficulties, an idea that Don Agustín pointed out at the beginning of the century, and that today has found new scientific evidence, students learn more and empower their talents.
For its part, it is essential to develop those areas associated with the good life or the life of fulfillment. These include: 1) physical health and inner peace, 2) material security, 3) positive relationships and emotions, 4) the construction of a life with meaning and purpose, and, 5) the cultivation of a ethical and spiritual dimension.
The school, by 2027, will be a benchmark in Latin America in Positive Psychology and Positive Education, just as the Geelong Grammar School in Australia is today.
A school that educates for the improvement of humanity and of the planet
In education awareness of the other is essential. The idea of educating oneself for contribution and solidarity, and not only enrichment and self-improvement, has been a pillar of the Gimnasio Moderno. The curriculum of the future will have to deepen this vocation. Social and environmental projects must cross the pedagogical from all levels. Preparing for the care of the environment and the crises of the planet, the challenges of peace and social equity are an imperative exercise, which minimizes destructive competition and privileges collaborative and sensitive work with the realities of others.
A school that is centered in the development of values and the spiritual dimension
The Gimnasio Moderno was born as an educational, political and spiritual project. Within this dimension, the idea is developing in the students an education that allows them to build a sense and purpose of life, the relationship of their actions with other causes and service, respect and tolerance for other ways of thinking, such as the approach to nature, silence and meditation, self-knowledge and inner peace, and contact with other essential values, such as love and tolerance.
For the human development, it seeks to go beyond the classes. Looking ahead, it is important to have additional times and spaces to carry out activities related to gratitude, writing and reflection, awareness of the body and emotions, physical exercise in all its manifestations and sports, meditation and aesthetic expression, play and play to strengthen habits, music and body expression, school norms and values, and different exercises that awaken other relationships with the environment.
