Bilingualism and Internationalization Coordination
The school has established the need for a bilingual education in its educational project, as it recognizes the importance of linguistic competence in Spanish, the mother tongue of most of our students, and knowledge of other languages, especially English. In general terms, the use of this second language allows the learning of non-linguistic curricular subjects in the context of the School. The goal for bilingual education in the Gimnasio Moderno is to develop diverse, bilingual and dynamic repertoires, with particular competencies in English as a starting point for lifelong learning. The role of the coordination is based on guaranteeing this integration of languages in the development and learning of students through the work of the teachers in the classroom as well as in the different international projects led by the school.
Our concept of bilingualism and the approach to teaching uses the elements presented in the common European framework. The Gimnasio Moderno not only focuses exclusively on what a student has to learn in order to use a language as a means of communication, but also on knowledge and skills to learn about various topics in other languages and cultures. The bilingual activity in Gimnasio Moderno integrates in a coherent way the different perspectives and environments that frame the development of skills needed to educate citizens of the world.
