Environment and Sustainability
The Environmental Area works with the Science Area in the Flight to Sustainability project, a proposal that seeks to reinforce the school’s commitment to Colombian society through the generation of awareness, knowledge, skills and values to create a fair and sustainable future. This project is currently organizing an International Meeting on Education for Sustainability and has several international agreements. The purpose is to create a Scientific Agenda for the community and the country.
Infomation and Communications Technology
The Gimnasio Moderno, pursuant to the current demands of inserting and including Information and communications technology (ICT) in the educational field, and aware of the implications that they have in pedagogical processes, proposes creating an instance to reflect and identify the potential and the possibilities that they offer. The guidelines for this integration of training with technological challenges have been set out in the book Educating in the age of applications, a project built between expert teachers, expert former students and managers.
Chair of Peace
The school, in response to the requirements of the law to create a Chair of Peace and fully identified with the importance of this task for the country, carried out an exercise with its entire community to think about the best way to achieve this purpose. Parents, teachers, students, managers and a team of experts close to the spirit of the school, designed a curriculum proposal that complied with the requirements of the law, and that at the same time served as an example to other institutions of the country. This project emphasized the importance of training, the contact with the internal world, the development of consciousness, self-knowledge, the development of internal peace and emotional stability, as well as the importance of having a curriculum of the future based on the imagination, the historical events and the specific contact with reality.
Chair of Afro-Colombian studies
According to Law 70 of 1993, the school will offer a Chair of Afro-Colombian Studies, which will be offered from the areas of social sciences and music, in the different grades of the school. These chairs will disseminate the cultural practices of black communities and their contributions to the history and culture of our country. Additionally, through the excursion program of the Gimnasio Moderno, a direct approach to the current reality of Colombian black communities will be carried out.
Chair od Entrepreneurship
According to Law 1014 of 2006, a Chair of Entrepreneurship and a training area for entrepreneurship and business generation will also be offered at the different levels of the school.
Within this area, spaces and activities of autonomy, leadership and entrepreneurship are included, such as the magazines “El Huevito” (the little egg) & “El Pichón” (the pigeon), the radio channel, Raqueta TV, the committees, the Debate Group, and of course, the entrepreneurship project “La Gimnasiana” (see Chapter X of the Institutional Educational Project – School Autonomy).
The transmission of knowledge and a favorable attitude to entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity, in addition to developing skills to generate companies will be encouraged through the Chair of Entrepreneurship and Leadership.
The school, as part of this program, will also offer classes on business topics in elective subjects (Chair of Business). Project work promotes research and entrepreneurship. The Business fairs of the Former Students Association, attended by the students of the last grades, support these objectives.
Social Service
Beyond Social Service as a legal requirement to obtain a high school graduate degree, the Gimnasio Moderno seeks to develop the sensitivity of its students so that in the future they may be capable of carrying out social transformation and community actions. It is a process that begins in preschool and ends in eleventh grade. From the tenth grade, students participate in activities with high social content. Through the academic subjects and excursions, pedagogical activities, social programs and projects led by the school, the Monsignor Emilio de Brigard Foundation and other foundations or public entities, the students develop skills that help them think about their role within the society and their vocation to serve the country.
